Felon out of jail on bond shoots himself with stolen gun while trying to break into a car
On January 6, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) in Shalimar, Florida, reported on a man from their Florida Panhandle area who had been out of jail on bond after being charged with two burglaries. The man, 28-year old Justin McCall from Crestview, Florida, thought it’d be a good idea to break into a car in the area while he was out on bond. That might have worked out for him, had he not accidentally shot himself in the leg, “with a firearm stolen from one vehicle while in the act of breaking into a car at another home on January 4th,” according to OCSO.
An investigation by the Sheriff’s Office’s revealed that McCall had been captured on several residential video cameras in the area committing a series of car and residential burglaries. One homeowner on Zach Avenue told deputies that she discovered someone had broken into her car and stolen her purse. Later while watching a neighbor’s surveillance video, she saw McCall on camera wearing her white Sperry boots, which had been in her home’s garage, according to ABC 3 News.
While he was out and about breaking into area vehicles and homes, McCall was out on bond for two burglaries. He was also on felony probation for a previous theft of a firearm. McCall was no stranger to local law enforcement, Overall, he has earned 13 felony guilty convictions since 2012 in Florida, including six for burglary, four for grand theft, and one for grand theft of a firearm.
Then, on the morning of January 4, a woman living on Highway 85 north of Crestview called the Sheriff’s Office to report a man was outside of her home saying he had been shot. OCSO deputies responded to that location and found McCall with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.
On January 5, after witnessing McCall on surveillance video wearing items stolen from the Zach Avenue residence, OCSO arrested the injured burglar and charged him with:
- grand theft,
- burglary to a structure,
- car burglary, and
- felony violation of probation.
