If you’ve never been to Point Pleasant, New Jersey, it’s got everything you could possibly want in a vacation spot: a beautiful and well-maintained beach, boardwalk complete with great restaurants, bars and rides;  and it’s just a little laid-back – more geared toward families with younger children than it’s touristy big brother, Seaside, New Jersey, just a few towns to the North – the same Seaside where the TV show “Jersey Shore” took place.

But yesterday, things got violent on the normally uneventful Point Pleasant beach when two men had to be rushed to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey, after being stabbed on this Labor Day holiday.  The stabbings took place on the beach and very near the boardwalk.

The Point Pleasant Beach mayor says two men were stabbed on Monday and at least two others were taken into custody in relation to the attack. Witnesses described seeing two groups of people arguing for about 15 minutes before punches were thrown and someone pulled out a knife. ~ NBC News

Witnesses on the scene said they were enjoying the sun and the surf when the fight broke out.  Those witnesses went on to say that it appeared the violent altercation seemed to be over a woman. “It sounded like the one guy was accusing another guy of hitting on a girl,” one witness said.

The video below, posted on Twitter, shows lifeguards running alongside a beach patrol vehicle, in response to the stabbings.

APP reported Point Pleasant Mayor Paul Kanitra as saying that the stabbings took place sometime after 3:30 p.m. Another witness on the scene, Steve Morrell of Manalapan, was enjoying his relaxing beach day when the violence broke out.  He credited the first responders with the speed in which they rushed to help the stabbing victim.

“The first one they took out right away,” Morrell said. “The second one they had to work on to stabilize” before bringing the victim to a waiting ambulance.

Police quickly chased down and arrested two men accused of the stabbings.  An investigation is ongoing, police said.
