Film: ‘Moana 2’ tops $1 billion at global box office

Disney’s animated sequel, Moana 2, has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.  Initially planned as a streaming series for Disney+, the film was later shifted to a theatrical release, a decision that has clearly paid off, according to Variety.  Premiering on Thanksgiving 2024, Moana 2 has garnered $445 million domestically and $567 million internationally, according to MSN.

Synopsis: Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui years after their original 2016 adventure for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.  ~ Ace News Today

The film continues the journey of Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, as she embarks on a new adventure across the treacherous seas of Oceania.  The voice cast also includes Dwayne Johnson, Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo, according to Screenrant.

 Moana 2’s success is attributed to its wide theatrical release, which allowed it to reach a broader audience compared to a streaming-only release.  This $1 Billion milestone makes Moana 2 the third Disney film of 2024 to surpass $1 billion, following Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, according to Collider.

The film’s impressive box office performance has outpaced the original Moana film release, which earned $680 million globally in 2016.  The sequel’s success underscores the enduring appeal of Disney’s animated features and the potential of theatrical releases for family-friendly films
