Fla. teen arrested 2 days after Parkland shooting for threatening to shoot up Broward Co. schools
Only two days after the school shooting in Parkland where 17 died and 14 more suffered serious injuries, a teenager from Lauderhill, Florida, posted a message on social media, “threatening to kill people at several Broward County schools,” according to a press release from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. That 15-year-old boy has since been tracked down and arrested.
Just after midnight on February 16, Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) detectives were notified of a post on Instagram where the male poster said he was going to kill people and listed various schools he was planning on targeting.
BSO Violent Crimes Unit detectives immediately launched an investigation into the threat, ultimately locating the suspect and taking him into custody that afternoon. The teen appeared to be remorseful and claimed his post was a joke aimed at scaring his cousin.
The unidentified teen is facing one count of sending a written threat to kill, which is a third-degree felony under Florida Law.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to continue reporting any suspected threats by calling (954) 764-HELP (4357) or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS (8477). The BSO promises that anyone found in violation of the law will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
