Florida boy, 15, arrested after posting online that he was going to be the next great mass shooter

On November 8, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office headquartered in DeLand, Florida, announced that a 15-year-old boy from Port Orange in Central Florida, was taken into custody after making online threats to become the next mass shooter, going as far as posting that, “One day my name and face will be all over the news and everyone will wish they took me seriously.”

The Sheriff’s Office was notified of the threats on Tuesday and responded along with the Port Orange Police Department to 15-year-old Jacob Long’s home, where he was arrested without incident.

Some of his messages posted to the online social media site Discord included:

  • “I am the next greenwood mall shooter”
  • “I will kill (epithet for Hispanic people)”
  • “I am 100% Serouse everything I have said is 100% real and I am not or never have been joking”
  • “I must become Patrick crusis 22 bozos”
  • “im going to put these to good use (smiley Emoji)” – along with a photo of rifles and a shotgun

Discord is a voice, video, and text chat app that’s used by tens of millions of people ages 13+ to talk and hang out with their communities and friends.

In an interview, Long told detectives he was joking when he wrote those post — including a post of his saying he “is not and never has been joking.”

The sheriff’s office said an anonymous tip was submitted to the FBI, leading to an investigation.  ~ CBS 12 News

The FBI ‘s investigation into the shooting threats determined that the poster was in the Volusia County area and local law enforcement agencies were contacted.

No weapons were found during the investigation.

Long was charged with making written threats to kill, a felony.  The teen was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice, where he was being held in secure custody as of yesterday.
