On May 28, Florida’s Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) reported on the macabre story wherein their Homicide Detectives arrested a 14-year-old girl in connection with the murder of her 79-year-old grandmother.

Background:  At approximately 12:26 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, BSO deputies along with Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a call about an unresponsive female at 4191 N.W. 41st Street in Lauderdale Lakes. . Once on the scene, emergency crews met with the victim’s son, who stated he went to visit a friend and left his mother, Yevheniia Koval, at the residence with his 14-year-old daughter. When he returned home, he found his mother unresponsive on the floor with multiple bruises on her body.

Paramedics transported the 79-year-old victim to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigators with BSO’s Crime Scene and Homicide units responded to investigate. According to detectives, an autopsy performed by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the victim’s death a homicide.

During the course of their investigation into the woman’s murder, detectives identified the 14-year-old granddaughter as their primary suspect. The juvenile, who had been admitted into the hospital the day of the incident for medical clearance, was taken into custody on Friday, May 24 and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) for processing.

The teen, identified as 14-year-old Sofia Koval, was taken into custody on Friday, May 24, following the report from the Medical Examiner.

A family friend said that the young girl was struggling.

“She wanted her mom who is in the United Kingdom. She can’t get over here so she’s, she was distorted. I can’t see her doing anything drastic,” said the woman.  ~ WSVN

The child is now looking at one count of second-degree murder in the heinous murder of her grandmother.  Officials have not yet provided an official motive for the murder.
