On Saturday, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, headquartered in DeLand, Florida, gave the parents in their community a “heads-up” regarding an attempted kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl that went down on Friday in the Orange City area, as that child was getting off her school bus. A man approached that little girl and asked her to get into his car. Before the day was up, deputies located and arrested 60-year-old Daniel V. Turner and charged him with aggravated stalking of a minor and attempting to lure or entice a child.
Deputies responded to the area of West Minnesota Avenue and Spring Hollow Drive, Orange City, around 5:15 p.m. Friday – after other drivers witnessed what was happening and intervened. Those Good Samaritans also called 9-1-1.
The 10-year-old told deputies the suspect pulled up to her in his car and asked her to get in, explaining that he was not a pervert, or weird, and that he could take care of her. She told him “no thanks” and kept walking, and two other motorists stopped to check on her and contact law enforcement.
With a detailed suspect and vehicle description, deputies located Turner at a home on nearby Jetske Circle in Orange City, and took him into custody at the conclusion of the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office reminded parents that the situation that occurred on Friday marked a great opportunity to talk to their children about how they should handle potentially dangerous situations like this. The Sheriff’s Office also thanked the adults that were on the scene for looking out for the children in their area.
“It takes a village.”
