Lately, residents in Vero Beach, Florida, have expressed some dissatisfaction with their local law enforcement officers not confronting and ticketing speeders who could be seen weaving in and out of traffic at high rates of speed on Vero’s busy roadways. U.S Route 1 in Vero Beach has been the scene of numerous traffic accidents in recent months which has only added to the dismay of those residents.

But over the 2019 Memorial Day Weekend, those same residents were taking to social media to express their delight and share stories of our men in blue pulling over drivers for speeding on county roadways.

Yesterday, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that their office, in conjunction with officers from the Florida Highway Patrol and neighboring Sebastian Police and Fellsmere Police, conducted a two-day traffic enforcement detail over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

One of the arrests resulted in the seizure of a Suzuki GSXR600 motorcycle. On Sunday, Deputy Jaworski with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office observed a yellow and purple motorcycle traveling 75 mph in a 45-mph zone in the 600 block of South US1. The rider was not wearing a helmet or eye protection.

Deputy Jaworski attempted to stop the motorcycle but the rider fled Southbound on US1 at over 120 mph. Due to the speed the rider was travelling, Deputy Jaworski terminated his attempt to stop the motorcycle.

The next day, Deputy Jaworski observed the same motorcycle being operated by the same rider as the previous day traveling north on US1 in the 1700 block. Again, the rider was not wearing a helmet or eye protection.

This time Deputy Jaworski was able to get the tag off the motorcycle prior to attempting to stop it. When Deputy Jaworski attempted to stop the motorcycle, the rider fled at speeds of over 100 mph Northbound on US1. Due to the speed the rider was traveling, Deputy Jaworski again terminated his attempt to stop the motorcycle.

Through investigative work, Deputy Jaworski was able to identify the rider of the motorcycle as Jimmy Landon. Deputy Jaworski was able to track Landon down at a residence in the western portion of Indian River County where he arrested Landon for two counts of fleeing and eluding as well as one count of no motorcycle endorsement.

Landon is currently being held in the Indian River County Jail on a $51,000 bond.

In addition to getting Landon off the streets, the units that participated in the holiday weekend detail produced the following statistics:

  • 359 vehicles stopped
  • 226 citations issued
  • 191 warnings
  • 16 arrests excluding DUI’s
  • 7 DUI’s
