A grand jury has indicted an accused drug dealer on a first-degree murder charge following a fatal overdose that occurred last year.  On July 13, a grand jury indicted 36-year-old Jahvon McFarlane of Bell, Florida, for first degree murder for his unlawful sale and distribution of a controlled substance. The city of Bell is located within Florida’s Palm Beach County.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that their office believes this indictment to be the first of its kind in the 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, which encompasses Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties,  according to WTVX CW-34 News.
The indictment against McFarlane stems from a fatal drug overdose that occurred on May 9, 2020.  The victim was found dead in her home from an apparent drug overdose, which the Medical Examiner’s Office determined to be a combination of fentanyl and cocaine. The M.E. ruled the cause of death acute fentanyl and cocaine intoxication.
The subsequent investigation into the drug overdose death determined the victim got the drugs from McFarlane. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that their agency worked closely with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to build a strong enough case against McFarlane to warrant the murder charge.
McFarlane was taken into custody almost immediately after being indicted with assistance from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. He is awaiting extradition to Indian River County.
Officials said that no further information will be released at this time.
