At approximately 4:30 a.m. on November 2, Broward County Regional Communications received a call regarding a suspicious incident at a residence located at 4313 N.W. 54th Street in North Lauderdale, Florida. When deputies arrived, they located an adult female, Aniuska Reguisero-Garces, who stated that she was intentionally set on fire by her boyfriend, who detectives immediately identified as Jimenez-Cortes.
Jimenez-Cortes fled the scene prior to deputies’ arrival and was arrested later in the day on November 2. The female victim was transported to a hospital burn center for her injuries. She died on December 29th; her death has been ruled a homicide.
Crime scene and special victim’s units were notified and investigated the circumstances surrounding this violent incident. The preliminary investigation reveals that Jimenez-Cortes poured an accelerant on his girlfriend’s body – and set the woman on fire with a cigarette.
Jimenez-Cortes was originally charged with attempted murder. With the death of Reguisero-Garces, the charge has been upgraded to murder. Jimenez-Cortes also faces a charge of arson.
A neighbor’s home video surveillance system caught the moments that Jimenez-Cortes set his girlfriend on fire. The couple can be seen in a physical altercation leading up to the moments that Jimenez-Cortes set his girlfriend on fire. In Spanish, the murderer can be heard saying to his girlfriend, “Die you dog.”
As Reguisero-Garces burned alive, Jimenez-Cortes can be seen calmly walking away from the scene.
That video, which comes with a graphic warning, is shown below.
