Florida shootout: Two dead, two Palm Bay police officers also shot and hurt
Yesterday, Florida’s Palm Bay Police Department shared the gruesome news of two of their officers getting shot after they responded to a domestic disturbance in their town. A violent suspect on the scene and a second individual who has yet to be identified, also lost their lives in the shootout.
On January 28 at approximately 2 p.m., Palm Bay Police officers responded to the 400 block of Forgal Avenue NE in connection to a domestic disturbance. Upon arriving, officers attempted to speak with a 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, who was exiting the residence and refusing to comply with the officers’ verbal commands.
Shortly thereafter, an exchange of gunfire occurred, injuring two of the Palm Bay officers. Additional officers responded to the area and pursued the suspect, who fatally wounded another person on the scene before being engaged by law-enforcement and subsequently killed.
The two wounded police officers are being treated for their injuries and are both expected to make complete recoveries.
At a press conference yesterday, Police Chief Mariano Augello stated:
“Two of our officers were shot today as a result of doing their jobs and that’s protecting our community. We will not tolerate anybody raising their guns or any type of lethal force against officers.”
In a subsequent statement, the Palm Bay Police Department also shared the following:
“We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to our officers, and to the law enforcement agencies that have assisted our police family during this difficult time. Additionally, thank you to the citizens of our community for their tremendous support throughout this challenging situation”.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement also joined local police on the scene due to the nature of the police investigation.
Palm Bay is located about 75 miles southeast of Orlando in what is known as Florida’s Space Coast area. For more on yesterday’s shooting in Palm Bay, see the video accompanying this article,
