Over the weekend, Florida’s Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reported that the agency was investigating a fatal shooting in Riverview involving a 14-year-old shooter and two victims.  One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was initially listed in critical condition.

On Saturday, September 16, HCSO deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 11000 block of Lynmoor Drive. Simultaneously, HCSO dispatchers received several calls reporting a young male suspect running through the Summerfield subdivision armed with a handgun.  That young man was later identified as 14-year-old Adeem Berry.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found Berry, who repeatedly placed a gun to his head and threatened to shoot himself. Deputies immediately began de-escalation tactics.

“The deputies who negotiated with this suspect for more than 16 minutes were calm, collected, and ultimately successful in convincing him to lower his weapon,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “They used their remarkable intuition and expertise to determine this suspect was not looking to harm them, but was contemplating suicide.”

The sheriff’s office posted the deputy’s body cam arrest video to their Facebook page,
and is also available by clicking the image below.

After constant and clear commands from deputies, the teen dropped his gun, but attempted to retrieve it again. At that point, deputies deployed a less lethal round, striking Berry in the hand with a 40 mm launcher to gain compliance and safely get him into custody.

While deputies worked to de-escalate the situation with Berry, additional units responded to the report of a male victim who was shot several times. During the active situation with Berry, deputies rushed into the Summerfield subdivision to rescue the male victim who was shot by Berry and who had fled to a neighbor’s home for help. Deputies were able to get the victim to EMS personnel and he was taken to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition.

As deputies took the suspect into custody, they discovered a female victim deceased on a driveway just down the street. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Turns out, the 14-year-old boy had shot his mother to death and left the mother’s boyfriend in critical condition.

WTSP reported Berry’s older brother as saying that his mother and her boyfriend were arguing, and then he heard multiple gunshots ring out inside the house.  “That’s when he realized his 14-year-old brother had shot them, according to Sheriff Chad Chronister during an earlier news conference.”

After hearing those gunshots inside the home, the older brother ran from the house seeking help.

The sheriff’s office also reported that the man who had been shot five times during the incident and was listed in critical condition is now stable. ~ Fox 13 News

  • Aggravated Assault With Deadly Weapon
