Florida woman charged with grand theft after not scanning all 18 trips’ worth of items at Target self-checkout

On February 13, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) announced that a Naples woman was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation that revealed she had stolen thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise from a Target store by not scanning all of her items at the self-checkout. Kimberly McDonnell, 36, is charged with grand theft $750-$5,000.
Detectives said McDonnell made 18 trips to Target at 2415 Tarpon Bay Boulevard in Naples, and stole 151 items totaling $3,472.02 from November 30, 2024 to February 2, 2025. The stolen items ranged from a $2.19 bottle of Dr. Pepper to a $54.42 throw pillow and from a $5.60 box of mechanical pencils to a $795 mattress.
“Retail theft costs everyone money, and we have an obligation to do everything we can to stop these criminals,” said CCSO Sheriff Rambosk.
Target’s loss prevention employees contacted and worked with CCSO detectives after observing McDonnell using the self-checkout and not scanning all of her items and then leaving the store without paying for the un-scanned merchandise.
Detectives reviewed the store surveillance video which showed McDonnell at the store’s self-checkout on multiple occasions failing to scan items in her cart and then leaving the store without paying for them before driving away in a silver SUV.
“It was obvious the suspect was not scanning the items with the intention of not paying for them,” detectives said in McDonnell’s arrest report.
McDonnell had a child with her on at least one of the shopping trips.
Through their investigation detectives established probable cause for McDonnell’s arrest. Deputies located her Wednesday afternoon and took her into custody.
Sally Kraska, also a Target customer, shared her frustration about the impact of theft on prices. “Because we all pay for it. I mean, that’s the truth. We all pay for it. They keep raising prices to make up for their deficit,” said Kraska. ~ WINK News
