In case you missed it, the National Football League recently announced that the organization has hired a former Obama Administration official to fill a role as its senior vice president of communications.  Katie Hill’s first day with the NFL was Monday, May 3, according to Fox News.  For the last four years, she worked in a similar capacity in former President Barack Obama’s family office.

Hill brings with her an impressive resume.  From 2014 to 2017, she served in the Obama Administration, first as National Press Secretary for health care at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, then joining the White House in 2015 as Assistant Press Secretary and spokesperson for a variety of policy areas, including health care, education, veterans’ affairs, the Council on Women and Girls, and sports.

She also has worked on Capitol Hill and at a public relations firm. She was honored in 2016 as one of Out Magazine’s “OUT100” LGBTQ leaders, alongside her White House colleagues, for their work to advance equality.

And if her name still doesn’t ring a bell, you may remember her from her days as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California’s 25th district who resigned in 2019 after less than a year in the House  – after admitting to having an inappropriate relationship with a campaign staffer.

Hill was once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party whose reputation suffered not only over her consensual affair with a subordinate – but due to the public release of nude photos that she said were released to smear her in a then ongoing divorce with her estranged husband.

According to U.S. News, Hill said at the time that she was, “ … the victim of “revenge porn” and a “smear campaign” from her estranged husband and “right-wing media.” Hill asked the U.S. Capitol Police to investigate who released the photos published by conservative website without her permission.”

In 2020, Hill also published her memoir, She Will Rise: Becoming a Warrior in the Battle for True Equality,” where the former Congresswoman shares her experience with misogyny and double standards in politics with the intent of hoping to help women, “topple the longstanding power structures that prevent them from achieving equality.”

And now that she’s left her position with former President Obama and joined the NFL, Hill will be responsible for leading the organization’s day-to-day communications operation, aligning the League’s communications strategy with its priorities. She will work closely with the leadership team across departments to ensure consistency of messaging and strategy, and to elevate success stories.

In addition, she will lead efforts in identifying reputational issues for the League and across the 32 clubs and developing strategies to mitigate their impact. Hill will be based at League headquarters in New York and will report to Jeff Miller, Executive Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs and Policy.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome someone of Katie’s talent to the NFL,” said Miller. “Her communications vision, world-class strategic instincts, and deep understanding of today’s dynamic media, digital and cultural landscape make her an excellent fit for the League and our goals.”

Hill graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in classical Greek, where she was an Echols Scholar. She and her wife, Andrea, are relocating from Washington, D.C. to New York.

Ace News Today wishes Katie Hill only the very best
in her new position as the NFL’s Senior Vice President of Communications.
