Fort Lauderdale girl,10, escapes being abducted twice in one week by same suspect (Video)
Yesterday, detectives with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) announced that they are continuing their efforts in investigating last week’s two attempted child abductions. A 10-year-old girl avoided being kidnapped on two separate occasions – last Wednesday and again on Thursday. Authorities continue to urge anyone with any information about either of those failed kidnapping attempts, the suspect, or the suspect vehicle to please contact Detective DeQuarto at (954) 828-6559.
Information can be provided anonymously. The flyer provided in this article includes a photo of a similar vehicle that matches the description provided by the victim. It is not the actual suspect vehicle.
The incident happened between the 1400 block and the 1500 block of Northeast 17th Way, near Bennett Elementary and Sunrise Middle schools, Detective Ali Adamson, an FLPD spokesperson said. The girl’s parents tell Local 10 that the student reported the incident to Bennett Elementary School staff, but she is not a student there, police said. “I don’t know why the school didn’t alert me,” her mother said.
Background: The FLPD is investigating two incidents that went down last week involving a suspicious male and the 10-year-old female victim. Based on the information they have available, police say that an unknown white male approached the 10-year-old girl on Wednesday morning while she was on her way to school. The man attempted to lure her by offering candy, money, and other items, which the astute child wisely declined.
When the suspect tried to lure the girl, “She refused, but he “attempted to grab her,” according to Fox News. She slipped away and told investigators he was driving a black work van with possible rear-end damage. The sliding side doors did not have windows, she told police.
When the suspect attempted to grab her, she was able to run away. She described the male as driving a black cargo-style / “big van” with possible damage to the rear end. The van has sliding doors but does not have windows on those doors.
Thursday morning, the child was approached again and once again managed to successfully flee a potential kidnapping. The young girl was approached by the same man while on her way to school. This time, though, the alleged abductor was on foot. She immediately ran away towards the school and away from the male.
Police say that the two failed abductions are of great concern, and they are seeking the public’s help in finding the person responsible. If you recognize the male or the van, or if you happen to have video of either of these incidents, please call Detective Tiana DeQuarto at 954-828-6559.
There is a $5,000 reward.
