On September 4 in a Georgia High school, two 14-year-old students and two teachers were shot to death in another deadly school shooting.  This time, the shooter was a 14-year-old, who only one-year ago was online threatening to conduct a mass shooting at school.

At the request of Georgia’s Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) opened an investigation into yesterday’s school shooting that took place in Barrow County, Georgia. Two Apalachee High School students and two teachers were killed in the horrific event where nine additional people – eight students and one teacher – were also injured and taken to various hospitals with injuries.  All of those injured were hurt as the result of gunfire “in some capacity, and all are expected to recover,” according to law enforcement officials.

The shooter, Colt Gray, age 14, has been arrested and charged with murder.  It’s being widely reported that Gray will be charged as an adult.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, who will be charged with murder and handled as an adult, Georgia Bureau of Investigation director Chris Hosey said. The suspect used an “AR platform-style weapon” in the shooting and surrendered to law enforcement after he was confronted by a school resource officer, Hosey said. ~ NBC News

GBI’s preliminary investigation revealed that on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at about 10:20 a.m., Barrow County authorities received alerts about reports of an active shooter. Radio chatter from an Apalachee High School resource officer also indicated an active shooter. Within minutes, law enforcement was on scene.

Once on the scene, law enforcement immediately located Gray. Gray surrendered immediately and was taken into custody.

Law enforcement first became aware of Gray last year after he made threats to carry out a school shooting.  Gray was 13-years-old when he made those online threats in 2023 – threats that included images of guns.  The Jackson County Sheriffs’ Office investigated those threats and interviewed the 13-year-old Gray and his father.  “The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject [Colt Gray] did not have unsupervised access to them,” according to an FBI statement shared by Fox News.

Two students and two teachers died in yesterday’s violent shooting at Apalachee High School. They have been identified as:

  • Mason Schermerhorn, age 14 (Student),
  • Christian Angulo, age 14 (Student),
  • Richard Aspinwall, age 39 (Teacher),
  • Christina Irimie, age 53 (Teacher),

Last night, GBI held a press conference and shared some important points regarding the shooting:

  • At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that there were additional shooters. Investigators are actively pursuing all leads regarding any potential associates of the shooter.
  • There is no evidence of a list of schools being targeted; however, there is a lot of evidence that is being recovered and evaluated. Investigators are diligently reviewing leads to determine if there are any active threats.
  • There was a call to another local high school yesterday morning with a reported threat. Police responded, investigated, and determined there was no threat.

GBI reports that their investigation remains active and ongoing. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
