Over this past weekend, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported that four people were seriously injured in a car crash that sent the engine from one of the vehicles about 50-yards from the crash scene. All-in-all, five people had to be hospitalized on Saturday,  after officials said that a Tesla sedan ran through a red light and collided into a Volkswagen Jetta in the north Stuart area, according to TC Palm.

The horrific two-vehicle car crash happened on January 20 around midnight on Dixie Highway and Savannah Road in Stuart, Florida.  The impact was so great between the Tesla and the Volkswagen, that four people were ejected and found lying in the roadway by the time deputies arrived on the scene.

Three people were taken by ambulance to the hospital, a fourth was flown to a trauma center. Injuries were serious but did not appear to be life threatening, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The 26-year-old from Vero Beach who was driving the Tesla, was cited for running a red light, careless driving and not wearing a seatbelt, according to TC Palm.

A preliminary investigation points to excessive speeds as a primary cause of the crash. The Sheriff’s Office said that this was the third such horrific crash involving high speeds that has occurred on area roadways in the past several weeks.
