‘Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire’: Max announces streaming premier date
Yesterday, sci-fi fans learned that Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will make its streaming debut on Max next Thursday, July 4. We were also happy to hear that a version of the film with American Sign Language (ASL) will also stream exclusively on Max the same day.
The ASL version of the film was produced exclusively for Max, with ASL performer Otis Jones (Deaf West Theatre) providing interpretation. Jones was coached by Leila Hanaumi, who delivered a highly praised performance in Barbie with ASL last December, Max’s first ASL film interpretation.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire in ASL will be displayed as a unique title on the Max app, identifiable by its key art featuring the sign language symbol.
The film stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns and Fala Chen.
Warner Bros. describes the film, highly anticipated by sci-fi fans as: “an explosive, action-packed adventure that follows Kong’s journey to find his family through an undiscovered layer of Hollow Earth—and what he uncovers inadvertently brings forth the most dangerous threat to mankind yet… one that can only be countered (and possibly conquered) by the combined forces of Kong and Godzilla, now evolved like never before.”
In an era of struggling film releases, this latest installment in the franchise was a box office smash, figuratively and literally, when it hit the big screens earlier this year.
Following the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the new film finds the two iconic monsters putting aside their differences and living peacefully — with King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth alone and Godzilla fighting destructive monsters and napping in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, longing for fellow gigantic friends, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and the only creatures who can stop them are Godzilla and Kong. ~ Variety
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is directed by Adam Wingard. The screenplay is by Terry Rossio and Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater, from a story by Rossio & Wingard & Barrett, based on the character “Godzilla” owned and created by TOHO Co., Ltd.
The film is produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric Mcleod, Thomas Tull and Brian Rogers. The executive producers are Wingard, Jen Conroy, Jay Ashenfelter, Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira.
