‘Green Lantern’ series coming to HBO to feature several of the Lanterns, plus a gay Alan Scott
It’s been about a year since HBO Max announced that along with a few other DC-based properties, the premium network was also going to be developing a Green Lantern series for TV. Producer Greg Berlanti of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Titans, and Doom Patrol fame promised that the GL property would, “be unlike anything seen on television.” And now, according to DC Comics, the Green Lantern series is starting to take shape.
On Friday, the powers that be revealed that Green Lantern has been given an official series order for ten one-hour episodes. Tthe show will be spotlighting more than just one Lantern – and will also be featuring the Green Lantern Corps – the group comprised of all the GLs.
Green Lantern will include longtime ring-slingers like Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Killowog and Alan Scott.
The Alan Scott Green Lantern is a noteworthy addition, because as fans know, Scott’s backstory isn’t the same as the other Green Lanterns and he’s not known as a space-based superhero. However, the logline does confirm that like in recent comics, Scott will be a gay character:
From DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott—Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man—and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Killowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
For anyone that may not be familiar with the Alan Scott character, he was the original Green Lantern to debut in the Golden Age of comics and was a valued member of the Justice Society of America – the superhero group that predated the Justice League of America. He first appeared in All-American Comics #16, published back in 1940 and was not gay at the time. And in the world of comic books, his Green Lantern ring had a built-n weakness to anything made of wood.
We’re assuming that the Alan Scott to be featured in the upcoming series, in addition to being gay, does not have his origin back in the 1940s – and his GL ring will probably be able to defeat anything with a wooden composition.
The Green Lantern inspired series, based on the characters from the iconic DC comic, will come from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
There is not yet a release date known for the show. For more on the upcoming Green Lantern series, see the video accompanying this article.
