Greta Thunberg responds to Trump’s tweet criticizing Time naming her Person of the Year
On December 11, Time Magazine named teen climate activist Greta Thunberg Time’s 2019 “Person of the Year.”
Thunberg is 16 but looks 12. She usually wears her light brown hair pulled into two braids, parted in the middle. She has Asperger’s syndrome, which means she doesn’t operate on the same emotional register as many of the people she meets. She dislikes crowds; ignores small talk; and speaks in direct, uncomplicated sentences. She cannot be flattered or distracted. She is not impressed by other people’s celebrity, nor does she seem to have interest in her own growing fame. ~ Time
Her bio reads that beginning in 2018, the then 15-year-old Swedish student sparked an international call to fight climate change. She forged a hand-written poster stating, “School strike for climate,” and began skipping school every Friday to protest climate change outside the Swedish Parliament. Social media picked up her protests and her message soon went viral and influenced “millions of young people all over the world to organize and protest.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has coveted the opportunity to be named Time’s Person of the Year since being elected U.S. President and even went so far as to have his own fake Time cover created and hung in at least four of his clubs around the world, according to The Washington Post.
When president-elect in 2016, Trump was named Time’s Person of the Year. Even then, it really wasn’t awarded as an honor. The magazine explained:
“For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is Time 2016 Person of the Year.” ~ Time
But today, one day after Thunberg was named Person of the Year, the president, critical of Time’s current choice, tweeted, “So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!”
In response to the president’s tweet, Thunberg changed her Twitter profile to read, “A teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.”
