Hagerstown boy, 6, dead from malnutrition and starvation: Father charged with abuse and neglect resulting in death
This week, the Hagerstown Police Department reported on the tragic death of one of their city’s residents, a six-year-old boy. A Maryland man, the boy’s father, has been arrested and charged with the child’s death.
Background: On Tuesday, November 28 at approximately 12:51 p.m., officers with the Hagerstown Police Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of N. Locust Street in Hagerstown, for a report of an unresponsive six-year-old boy. Upon their arrival, officers discovered that the six-year-old child was dead.
Police say that they were able to determine that the deceased child was suffering from severe malnutrition and starvation. Subsequent investigation revealed that the juvenile’s father, Andre Derek Ford, failed to provide proper care and medical treatment to the youngster.
A second young boy, age five, was also in the residence. He was removed from the home and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
An arrest warrant was obtained and served on 31-year-old Andre Derek Ford. Following Ford’s arrest, he was charged with the following:
- Child Abuse -1st Degree: Death
- Child Abuse – 1st Degree Severe Physical Injury
- Neglect of Minor
The police said that additional charges against Ford may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation and results of the autopsy. He is currently incarcerated at the Washington County Detention Center.
Police report that their investigation remains open, active and ongoing. The department added that no further details will be released at this time.
