Hand grenade explodes in Indiana home killing a dad, two teens with shrapnel injuries
Yesterday, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. with Indiana’s Lake County Sheriff’s Department had the sad duty of announcing that a local father lost his life and two of that dad’s teen children were hurt in a macabre explosion that we can only hope was accidental. Sometime before 6:30 p.m. on May 20, Lake County police officers responded to a reported explosion in the Lakes of the Four Seasons community.
A family at a home in the 3400 block of W. Lakeshore Drive had been going through a grandfather’s belongings when they found a hand grenade. One of the family members reportedly pulled the pin on the device and it detonated.
The adult father was found unresponsive at the scene and was later declared deceased. His two children, a 14-year old boy and an 18-year-old female, were transported to an area hospital with shrapnel wounds. Officials initially said the boy was 17 years old, according to ABC News.
The Porter County Bomb Squad was called to secure the area and to determine whether or not there were any additional explosive devices at the location. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives and CSI unit are investigating. The Sheriff said that there wouln’t be any further updates at this time.
