On October 26, a team of five Harford Community College students participated in the Baltimore Cyber Range (BCR) Security Operations Center/Defensive Operations Exercise Scenarios held at the BCR, located at 3700 Koppers Street in Baltimore. The BCR and the State of Maryland have made this unique one-day cyber range experience available to community college students across the state as part of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation-sponsored Employment Advancement Right Now Advanced Cybersecurity Training grant.

Students Austin Anderson, Christopher Kim, Andre Murray, Tara Sheppard, and Connor Suit composed Harford Community College’s Cyber Team for this event. Frank Mayer, M.S., CISSP, adjunct faculty member at the College, trained and accompanied the students to this Baltimore Cyber event and coordinated their participation in it.

The exercise included sophisticated defensive operations scenarios that included real world threats. The team prepared for the event by reviewing training videos on their own and also by meeting to train hands-on in the cyber lab on several occasions.

The team’s hard work was evident in the fact that they were able to complete both scenarios within the allotted time and to execute the required associated tasks to standard. The students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in a truly unique and advanced experience. Participating students will receive a certificate and the BCR staff will follow up with the students to assist them with achieving their goal of a career in cybersecurity. Twenty-six HCC students who previously participated in this event have found jobs in cybersecurity.
