Henderson man charged with beating, whipping five-year-old son to death
On March 16 at approximately 1:30 a.m., Henderson Police and Fire Departments responded to the 700 block of Center Street in the greater Las Vegas, Nevada, area in reference to a five-year-old boy who was unconscious and not breathing.
First responders attempted resuscitative measures; but the child was reportedly beyond help and was pronounced deceased on scene, according to police in Henderson.
Investigators identified the suspect in the child’s death as the victim’s father, 33-year-old Gerald Oglesby.
The child stopped breathing after being whipped by Oglesby with a cable box cord, according to a Henderson police arrest report. The 33-year-old told police that his son was watching a TV show that he wasn’t supposed to watch and back talked before using the cord, splitting the child’s chin open.
Oglesby reportedly whipped the child again later that Wednesday night because the child didn’t want to go to bed, the report said, while also hitting the child in the abdomen with a slipper. Oglesby told police he knew he hit the child too hard as the child wasn’t acting normal and laid down. The child vomited a short time later, according to the report. ~ Fox 19 News
Oglesby was taken into custody and booked into the Henderson Detention Center and charged with one count of Open Murder.
“Gerald stated he did not want to lose custody of (his son) and so he chose not to call to get help,” cops wrote. Instead, he sent text messages to the boy’s mother, Charlveena Veecee, and to his sister. The mother received photos of the boy that had been on Gerald’s phone, while the man allegedly admitted to his sister that he whipped [the child] too hard. He then smoked a marijuana cigarette and proceeded to call 911, according to the arrest report. ~ The New York Post
As this is an open investigation, Henderson Police announced that no further details will be released at this time. Police did say the case is being investigated as the first homicide for the City of Henderson for 2022.
