On February 4, the Cecil County Public Schools (CCPS) went public with a huge “Thank you” in recognition of the quick thinking and bravery of Officer Annette Goodyear who selflessly and heroically pushed a student out of the way of a speeding and oncoming car whose driver did not stop at a school crossing.  If not for Officer Goodyear’s quick actions and pushing the child out of the way in the nick of time, that child would have certainly been mowed down in the road.  Although injured by the speeding driver’s car, the Officer has recovered well enough to be back on the job.

We want to take a moment to recognize Officer Annette Goodyear of the North East Police Department for her heroic actions today. We are thankful that Officer Goodyear was treated and released from the hospital after she pushed a student out of the way of an oncoming car. We are forever grateful for the selfless response of this hero. ~ CCPS

Officer Goodyear, a Corporal and 14-year veteran with the North East Police Department in the town of North East, Maryland, took the hit from that speeding vehicle while saving the child.

Yesterday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said he’ll be presenting Goodyear with a Governor’s Citation for, “her incredible heroism in putting herself at risk to save a young student from being hit by an oncoming car.”

Goodyear was stationed in the middle of the school crossing on a rainy February 4 morning in full crossing guard neon gear and guiding middle school students across the road.  In the video, you can see her motioning to the oncoming vehicle to stop while a young student enters the crossing.  Goodyear told the Washington Post that, “Out of the corner of my eye, I just see this blur.”

“I could feel the pain in my knees and my arms hitting the hood of the car,” Goodyear said. The student was unharmed and rushed to aid the injured officer.

The driver got out of her vehicle and said, “I just didn’t see you,” Goodyear recalled. “I’m thinking, ‘how could you not see that?’ ”
