If he’s asking you to pay up or get arrested, that probably isn’t the Sheriff calling
On November 9, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office headquartered in Bel Air, Maryland, sent out a notice asking local citizens if they had received a telephone call recently from “Sgt. Royster” of the Sheriff’s Office in reference to a “personal matter.”
If you have, it’s a scam!
The scammer continues that “Sgt. Royster” is calling you about missing jury duty and you will need to pay a fine to avoid jail time. In this recent scam, the caller is asking for payment through Zelle.
The Sheriff’s Office went on to say that they would never call you about Jury Duty, nor would they demand over-the-phone payment of fines in lieu of being arrested. Additionally, they will never call you and ask you to pay fines with a gift card, green dot card, electronic bank transfer, or any other similar means.
If you do get a call like this, hang up.
The Sheriff asked the community to please alert your friends and neighbors to the scam. And be informed that this sort of scam is not new – as evidenced by the video accompanying this article.
