Immokalee man sentenced to life in prison after family dispute turned into deadly shooting

A man arrested by Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) detectives in connection with the shooting death of another man in Immokalee, Florida, in 2020. has been sentenced to life in prison. On Monday, Collier County Circuit Judge John McGowan delivered the sentence to 41-year-old Gonzalo Herrera of Immokalee – following Herrera being found guilty on a second-degree murder charge.
Background: On March 13, 2020, Collier County deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 1900 block of Alexander Circle. Once on the scene, deputies found the 36-year-old victim sprawled in a parking lot with fatal gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim is being withheld under the Florida statute known as Marsy’s Law.
Investigators found a pair of zip-ties, made into handcuffs, on the ground next to the victim. Witnesses saw a black truck leaving the scene.

An autopsy concluded that the victim’s death was the result of a homicide brought about by multiple gunshot wounds. Witness statements and evidence led detectives to develop Herrera as a suspect.
Herrera and the victim were known to each other. A family dispute led to the shooting, detectives said. During their investigation and interviews with the suspect, detectives learned Herrera was mad at the victim and decided to confront him. “He then shot the victim during the confrontation.”
