(Updated, July 24, 1:01 p.m.) On July 23, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that their office was investigating a death that was discovered in a canal that afternoon in the area of 28th Avenue near 41st Street. Deputies were called out to the area when someone reported a “creepy amount” of buzzards in the neighborhood. Deputies discovered a body in the waters of that nearby canal.
The Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and the Medical Examiner’s Office were called to the scene. Detectives are still working to identify the body. The agency is treating the death as a homicide until such time as the evidence proves otherwise.
The announcement came during the afternoon hours yesterday, July 23, and deputies asked residents and drivers avoid the area until the evening hours and after the Sheriff’s Office vacated the scene.
Although no details regarding the deceased have been released, speculation runs high among the community rumor mills that the victim might be a woman that had gone missing on July 17 and who was last seen in the area of the 500 block of 37th Avenue in Vero Beach.
Update: The Indian River Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of the victim found in the canal as 33-year-old Maria Guadalupe Romo.
Officials stated that they have been searching for her since she was reported missing and was last seen in Vero Beach on July 17 in the 500 block of 37th Avenue. Deputies said that her next of kin has been notified, that Romo was two and one-half months pregnant and that they are still investigating this case as a homicide.
