If you’ve never heard of country singer Ingrid Andress before this week, you probably know her name now after the swift and harsh criticisms she received after her rendition of the National Anthem leading up to the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field on Monday in Arlington, Texas.  Her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was, in a word, “painful”.  It was hard to watch, and even harder to listen to.

Yahoo! shared that immediately following her performance, she became an instant viral sensation – but for all the wrong reasons.

Critics and fans alike did not hold back in expressing their disapproval. Some called the performance “brutal,” while others questioned Andress’s professionalism.  “The worst national anthem performance of all time” one tweet read, encapsulating a widely held sentiment. Some went as far as to say that their “ears are bleeding” after hearing her sing.

But on Tuesday, the day following her performance, the 32-year-old singer/songwriter took personal responsibility for her actions, apologized to her fans and the public at large, and ‘fessed up all across social media that she was drunk during her July 15 singing of the National Anthem.  She also announced that she’s immediately entering into rehab.

“I’m not gonna bulls*** y’all, I was drunk last night,” the singer, 32, wrote. “I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need. That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition. I’ll let y’all know how rehab is I hear it’s super fun.”

Andress had a few upcoming concert dates in July, one in Nashville and another in Denver that have been cancelled while she gets the help she needs. Her heartfelt apology and her announcement that she’s entering rehab is just the spin she needed to soften up her critics and turn her viral sensation into a more positive one;  and we all wish her only the very best in the future.

And let’s face it, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is a tough song to sing and has presented challenges to other professional singers in the past.   Trying to sing it while intoxicated would be an even greater challenge.  For more on Andress entering rehab following her intoxicated rendition of the National Anthem, see the video accompanying this article.
