Jacksonville mass shooter identified as Baltimore video gamer David Katz, 24
(Updated: August 28, 2018) Authorities have identified the mass shooter who killed two and injured nine more during a live “Madden NFL 19” video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, yesterday as 24-year-old David Katz from Baltimore, Maryland. Katz was an accomplished video gamer and winner of several notable tournaments who played under the gamer names “RavensChamp” and “Bread.” By the time the shooting stopped yesterday, Katz had turned the gun on himself and took his own life, bringing the shooting fatalities to a total of three.
At a press conference following yesterday’s shootings, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams reported that the two dead were found at the scene and that nine more people went to the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, according to NBC News. All the surviving victims are reported to be in stable condition. Two others were injured in the melee while trying to escape when the shootings started, bringing the total injured to 11.
As of this writing, there is no known motive for the shootings except to say that Katz had already lost the tournament before he commenced shooting.
Local FBI and ATF officials are assisting the Jacksonville sheriff’s office with the investigation. They remained on the scene at Katz’s home in the 1200 block of Harbor Island Walk near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Sunday night.

USA Today identified the two fatalities as Taylor Robertson, 27, of Ballard, West Virginia, and Eli Clayton, 22, of Woodland Hills, California. For more on the tragic shootings in Jacksonville, see the video accompanying this article.
On August 28, ABC News reported that Katz had a history of mental illness going back to when he was as young as 12; and that “as a teenager he was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and that he was prescribed anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications.”
CNN also obtained police records that show 26 calls for service to the police from the Katz family home in Columbia, Maryland, from 1993 to 2009, for issues ranging from “mental illness” to domestic disputes. At least two of those calls involved Katz arguing with his mother, though none of the reports provided to CNN show any physical violence.
