Jailhouse brawl caught on video inside Cook County Jail’s maximum-security tier
A night-time brawl that broke out in Chicago’s Cook County Jail on February 16 was caught on video and shared by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The fight started around 9:30 p.m. in the jail’s maximum-security housing tier. ABC News reports that 16 inmates involved in the melee are now facing mob action charges.
The jail-house fight involving the 16 inmates ended up with two inmates so badly injured that they had to be transported to local hospitals. The video of the fight captured by jailhouse surveillance cameras depicts an altercation that began with one inmate shoving another which led to several smaller fights breaking out among the detainees.
While several people went on the offensive, some appeared to try to stay out of the way or took protective positions near walls. When guards came in to break up the fight, some inmates sat on the ground with their hands up and others continued to try to fight or get away, the video shows. ~ per The Chicago Tribune
Most of the injured were treated inside the jail. One of the injured suffered what authorities described as puncture wounds. The Tribune quoted Sheriff Tom Dart as saying that none of the injuries suffered by the inmates during the fight were life-threatening.
Time reports authorities as saying that a home-made weapon was recovered at the scene after the fight was broken up. The video of the fight is available for viewing, below.
