Johnny Depp apologizes for Donald Trump assassination comments
Actor Johnny Depp has issued an apology for some off-the-cuff- comments he made regarding President Donald Trump at the June 22 Glatonbury U.K. Music Festival when he said “When was the last time an actor assassinated the president? However, it has been a while and maybe it is time. Can you bring Trump here?” When the crowd began booing, Depp followed up, saying, “No, no, no, you misunderstood completely. I think he needs… help.” Depp went on to say that he wasn’t referring to himself and as an actor he lies for a living,” according to The Washington Post.
After receiving a considerable amount of blowback from the White House and the general public regarding those comments, Depp spoke to People and issued the following statement on June 23: “I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump,” he said. “It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.”
Some of blowback Depp received came in the form a statement issued directly from the White House which read “President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead. I hope that some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official.”
The Secret Service, charged with the president’s protection, also weighed in on what they considered to be a possible crime and threat to the Commander-in Chief. The Post shared a statement from the Secret Service that read: “For security reasons, we cannot discuss specifically nor in general terms the means and methods of how we perform our protective responsibilities.”
The Washington Post also reminded us that the last time an actor assassinated a president was “1865, when John Wilkes Booth shot and killed Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre.”
