‘Kevin Can Wait’ to kill off show’s current wife and replace with Leah Remini
The CBS network is hoping to re-create the magic of having their “Kevin Can Wait” star Kevin James be married to his former “The King of Queens” co-star Leah Remini instead of his current “Kevin” co-star Erinn Hayes. The network is planning on killing off Hayes this summer while the show is on hiatus. When “Kevin” starts up anew this fall, the sitcom will have had a time jump into the near future where Hayes is dead and Remini is the new wife.
According to an August 1 report from Fox News, CBS programming boss Thom Sherman said that Hayes’ character would definitely be passing away, “… and we will be moving forward in time, catching up at a later date.” CBS president Kelly Kahl said that when the show starts up again in September, the sitcom would “experience a nine or ten month time jump in order for the sitcom’s characters to deal with the death of their wife and mother.” Kahl also told reporters that the current “Kevin Can Wait” children would be returning to the show.
The Washington Post shared a tweet from Hayes from back in June when she said, “True, I’ve been let go from the show. Very sad; I had a great experience season 1. Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.” Hayes’ departure from the show is CBS wanting to go in a different direction creatively, rather than any problem with Hayes’ performance, according to Vanity Fair.
During the first season of “Kevin Can Wait,” Remini shared the small screen once again with James, appearing on his new show as his former police partner, but one with whom he had an antagonistic relationship. Kahl went on record as saying that Remini’s appearance on the show wasn’t a test drive or an audition; but the CBS president could not deny that the spark was still there for James and his former sitcom wife.
Audiences will have to wait until September to see exactly how Hayes’ character gets killed off. We can only guess who will be portraying Remini’s father on the show, and whether or not he’ll be living in the basement.
