Kim Shattuck: Lead singer for The Muffs dead at 56
On October 2, the world lost a musical icon. Kim Shattuck, singer, songwriter and bassist for the ever-popular punk band The Muffs died after a long battle with ALS – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The singer who belted out the cover of “Kids in America” which was popularized in 1995’s Clueless soundtrack was 56 when she passed. Her heartbroken husband shared the announcement of his wife’s death on Instagram yesterday.
… Shattuck was a member of the Pandoras before she and fellow band member Melanie Vammen broke off from the group and founded their own punk band the Muffs in 1991. They released their first singles “Guilty” and “New Love” that year, as well as a 1992 single “I Need You.” It wasn’t until 1993 that they debuted their first self-titled album via Warner Bros Records. ~ Entertainment Weekly
Condolences and sadness were evident on Twitter from pop punk band The Dollyrots and California’s 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, to name only a few.
Sadly, The Muffs had recently reunited for a new album, No Holiday, which is scheduled for release on October 18. Prior to her illness, Shattuck was still touring and performing.
The Muffs released four studio albums as well as numerous singles including “Lucky Guy” and “Sad Tomorrow,” and a cover version of “Kids in America” used in the movie “Clueless.” Their 2016 album, Whoop Dee Doo, was released on Burger/Omnivore Records. It was to be followed by “No Holiday,” the band’s seventh release, slated for October 18 on Omnivore Records. ~ MSN
The Muffs’ bassist Ronnie Barnett also shared a tribute for his bandmate on his Facebook page.
There’s so much to say & I will in time but for now I just want to celebrate my bandmate & friend Kim. This month marks 29 years since we formed our group. I can’t say we always pulled it off but there was not one night we stepped on stage & didn’t try & be the best band in the world. Sometimes we actually succeeded …….
I love you Kim, we are family, thanks for changing my life
