In a holiday weekend that’s featuring a glut of big names and big movies, D.C.’s super hero film “Aquaman” easily swam by the competition earning an estimated $72.1 million at the box office.  The Warner Bros. film beat out all the other big releases for the weekend which included the much anticipated “Mary Poppins Returns” from Disney and “Bumblebee” released by Paramount, according to Business Insider.

Directed by James Wan, the popularity and success of “Aquaman” is a breath of fresh air for Warner Bros. following the disappointing releases of 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and 2017’s “Justice League” films.  Both of those efforts were so ill-received as to stop “Justice League 2” from going into production.

If and when “Justice League 2” does get produced, it’s a fair bet that Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill won’t be returning as The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel.  “Assuming this movie gets made in the next five years, it’s a virtual lock that Gal Gadot will be there as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash,” according to Den of Geek!.

“Mary Poppins Returns” won the second place spot this holiday weekend earning $22.2 million while the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” won the third place spot earning $21 million.
