On July 19, the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office headquartered in Cut Bank, Montana, reported on a story where a family of five vacationing in Montana were rammed by a man driving a pickup truck.  After plowing into the family, the driver got out of his truck and started shooting at the family.  He also broke out a knife to attack them, eventually killing the father of the family and one baby.  Two women from the family also sustained severe injuries.

On July 17 at 8:56 p.m., the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Dispatch Center received reports of a man shooting at a woman in East Glacier Park. Multiple law enforcement agencies including Glacier County Deputies, Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services Officers, National Park Service Rangers, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper, an FBI agent, Blackfeet EMS, Glacier Park Lodge Security, and East Glacier Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

Upon their arrival, law enforcement located two deceased males, two critically injured females, and one critically injured 18-month-old baby.

Upon securing the scene and successfully transporting the victims that were still alive, an investigation into the incident began.

Their investigation revealed that Derek Amos Madden, 37, of Goldsby, Oklahoma, purposefully drove his vehicle into a group of people who are walking beside the roadway. After crashing his vehicle into a tree, Madden exited his vehicle armed with a shotgun. Madden began shooting at the same victims he just hit with his vehicle.

At the scene, Madden shot and killed David Siau, 39, of Syracuse, New York.  Madden continued to shoot at the victims who were running away, wounding 40-year-old Christy Siau – and killing 18-month-old McKenzie Siau. Christy and baby McKenzie were also Syracuse residents.  Christy was holding her daughter McKenzie when they were both shot.

Madden then went after Christina Siau, 30, of East Glacier Park, Montana and attacked her with a knife.

During this attack, Christina fiercely fought back, and despite receiving critical injuries, fatally wounded Madden who died at the scene.

In addition to the victims listed above, two minor children who were also present were able to run away escaping injury. Christy, Christina, and McKenzie were transported to Indian Health Service in Browning where McKenzie was pronounced dead. Christy and Christina were flown on to a higher level of care with critical injuries.

The investigation has found that Madden was in a prior relationship with Christina Siau and was suffering from mental health issues. The attack was isolated to this incident with a clear connection between the Madden and his victims.

According to The Daily Mail, Madden was Christy’s ex-boyfriend; and he suffered PTSD from serving in Afghanistan and had been drinking while on his meds, his sister says.

When the carnage had ended, Madden had killed his ex-girlfriend’s brother, David Siau, and her 18-month-old niece McKenzie.  Christina somehow managed to kill her assailant / ex-boyfriend Derick Madden; and two of the young Siau children escaped unscathed, physically.  Police have not yet revealed exactly how Madden met his end.

Siau family members have established a GoFundMe page to assist with Christina and Christy’s medical bills.
