Man charged in involuntary manslaughter shooting death of 2-year-old Baltimore County boy
Baltimore County Police have arrested and charged a man in the shooting death of a 2-year-old boy after an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Shaquiel Malquan Griffin (25) was charged on Friday with leaving a firearm where a minor could gain access, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm by a person with a previous felony conviction, and involuntary manslaughter.
Police and medics responded to the 3100 block of Bero Road in Arbutus around 3:07 a.m. on Tuesday morning after the boy’s mother called 9-1-1. They found Tye Ryder Flint, who would have turned three-years-old next month, in cardiac arrest in a spare bedroom. Medics began life-saving procedures, but to no avail.
The toddler was pronounced deceased at St. Agnes Hospital at 3:49 a.m.
Homicide detectives determined that Griffin, who has no permanent address, was staying in the spare bedroom at the location and concealed an unsecured loaded handgun in the room. Tye, who had gone to sleep in his mother’s room, entered the spare bedroom while everyone was sleeping, found and discharged the gun which struck him in the head.
Griffin retrieved the gun and fled the location prior to police arrival.
Griffin, who also had open warrants in both Baltimore County and Baltimore City at the time of his arrest, remains held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center following his bail review hearing on August 31.
