On August 24 at 6:23 p.m., police in Miami Beach responded to a restaurant in the touristy section of the 1400 block of Ocean Drive in their town in response to a shooting. When that shooting ended, a 21-year-old father died when he used his own body as a shield after the shooter pointed a gun at the man’s one-year-old son. Dustin Wakefield, the young dad from Castle Rock, Colorado, was on vacation with his family in Miami when the shooter, Tamarius Blair Davis, entered the La Cerveceria restaurant and pointed his gun at Davis’ baby boy.
“This guy came in with a gun waving it, saying it’s time to die. He pointed the gun at his son and Dustin said, ‘He’s only a boy,'” Mike Wakefield, the victim’s uncle, told the Miami Herald. “Dustin stood up between the gunman and the baby and he shot him. He shot him multiple times on the ground.” ~ Fox News
After shooting Wakefield, the 22-year-old Davis who hails from Norcross, Georgia, can be seen in the video below dancing a little dance and before fleeing the restaurant.
Police quickly arrived on the scene and took Davis down in a nearby alley. Davis lied down on the ground and was smiling as three of Miami’s finest approached the shooter with their guns drawn and shouting at Davis not to touch his gun.
Davis then rolled onto his side into a fetal position, before again rolling onto his back as officers approached. Davis screamed “I give, I give, I give” as officers flip him onto his stomach and handcuff him. ~ ABC News
Following his arrest, Davis told detectives that he “was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” and was going around just randomly shooting people, according to Yahoo News. Davis’ uncle shared with the media that his nephew, who worked in construction, “… was the kindest kid. He loved his family. He loved being a dad.”
Dustin Wakefield’s uncle has established a GoFundMe account for his nephew’s family, saying that following the tragedy in Miami, the family would need all the help they can get.
Following his arrest, Davis was charged with murder. As of yesterday, he was being held without bond at the Miami-Dade County Jail.
