Earlier this week, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office reported arresting 67-year-old Robert Patrick Raines, who has been employed as the Superintendent of the Shoreline Unified School District headquartered in Tomales, California. The arrest went down on June 8 at Raines’ home in Petaluma.
Raines was taken into custody after probable cause was developed for a violation of 288(a) PC, “Lewd Acts with a Minor Child under the Age of 14-years-old.”
Prior to those charges, the superintendent was placed on administrative leave by the district pending the outcome of the investigation. The case was investigated by the School Resource Officer and Investigations Detectives.
After being notified of the arrest, The Marin County Office of Education issued a statement saying that, “The health, safety and well-being of all of our students is our most important priority” stated Mary Jane Burke, Superintendent of Schools for the Marin County Office of Education. “It is the mandate of all schools to follow all relevant laws with regard to any allegations of child abuse. The district took swift and immediate action notifying the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and placed Mr. Raines on leave.”
Also on June 8, the Shoreline Unified School district released the following statement regarding the investigation into Raines:
A person reported an incident to the District on June 1, 2021 which was immediately reported to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. On the same date, Superintendent Raines was put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
SUSD Board President Jill Manning Sartori stated, “we are shocked and saddened by the news of the arrest of Mr. Raines. The safety and well-being of children is our highest priority at Shoreline. Our hearts are with the family affected by this incident.”
On June 10, The Legal Herald reported that Raines had been employed as a California educator for the last 40 years in Marin and Sonoma – and that he was only a few weeks away from retiring. He was previously employed as a principal and superintendent for the Alexander Valley Union School District and had worked as a principal at various schools, including Petaluma’s Wilson Elementary School.
“The allegations are false,” Raines told the Marin independent Journal – but he refused to comment any further.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office has requested that anyone with any information regarding Raines and this case to contact Detective Patton at (415) 473-7265.
