In a brutal tale that runs the gamut from mean girls’ school prank to school bullying to attempted murder, three western Pennsylvania teens attending Butler Intermediate High School in Butler, Pennsylvania, are looking at felony charges after exposing a classmate severely allergic to pineapples to that tropical fruit.  One of the mean girls reportedly rubbed pineapple on her hand and then delivered a high-five to her unsuspecting victim.  Buzzfeed reports that the victim was so allergic to pineapples that she ended up in a local hospital to prevent anaphylactic shock.

The 14-year-old girl that rubbed the pineapple on her hand and gave the high-five was charged with aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy, simple assault, and reckless endangerment according to CBS News affiliate KDKA in Pittsburgh. Her two female accomplices, ages 13 and 14, are looking at similar charges. The 14-year-old victim was released from the hospital on the same day the incident occurred and is doing fine.  The potentially deadly high-five went down on December 15.

None of the school girls are being identified. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the school knew of the victim’s allergy and knew that it was so severe that the school didn’t even serve any pineapple.  The culprit who delivered the pineapple-laced high-five reportedly procured the fruit from another student.

KDKA shared a statement released from the school that reads: “As with all student discipline issues, we are unable to provide a comment on the specific incident. However, it is our expectation that our students respect themselves and others. When that does not occur, the district will take appropriate disciplinary action and, if appropriate, contact law enforcement.”

Regarding the incident, Lt. Matthew Pearson of the Butler Township Police Department said that, “My understanding is she could go into anaphylactic shock and, if not properly and quickly treated, could die.”

“The main defendant put some on her hand. They conjured up a game, a plan to expose her through high-fiving her,” said Lt. Pearson.

The teen with the severe allergy was taken for treatment immediately and is OK, according to police.  ~ per KDKA
