Megan Rapinoe and USWNT accept invite by Dems to visit Congress
Following a brief but highly publicized and explosive Twitter flame war with U.S. President Donald Trump that began when Megan Rapinoe, co-captain of the World Cup-winning U.S. Women’s National Team, said that she would not go to the “f—ing White House” if her team won the Cup, it appears that she’ll be leading her team to meet with the U.S. Congress instead. That invite to Congress came from the Democrats after Trump tweeted that she should “win before she talks.”
The President went on to tweet:
“We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear.”
Rapinoe and her team have since gone on to win the World Cup. Appearing on “The Rachel Maddow Show” last night, Rapinoe told Maddow that as far as she knew – no formal invite from the President for the Team to visit the White House ever materialized.
Rapinoe’s invitation to Congress came first from New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez following the Twitter war of words between Trump and the 34-year-old co-captain. Invites from Dem leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi soon followed.
Rapinoe said that she and her team are willing to meet with any lawmakers in D.C., including the GOP, who wants to engage in a “a real substantive conversation,” according to The Business Insider. She went on to say that all of her team members are looking forward to going to D.C.
Rapinoe has since apologized for her cuss words regarding not going to the “f—ing White House,” but did double-down on her feelings on the matter.
“I would not go, and every teammate that I’ve talked to explicitly about it would not go,” she said. “I don’t think that we want that to be co-opted or corrupted by this administration.” ~ per CNN
Rapinoe and her team won the coveted World Cup on Sunday after beating the Netherlands in the final game of the series. The U.S. beat the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday night when Rapinoe converted a penalty kick in the second half and Rose Lavelle added a goal, according to CNBC. That win would be the fourth Women’s World Cup title for the U.S. and the team’s second in a row.
