(Updated) On Sunday, April 21, Melania Trump, the former First Lady of the U.S., began hawking a new piece of jewelry available via her personal website and launching it just in time for Mother’s Day.  The piece is a customizable necklace retailing at $245. The necklace, named “Her Love & Gratitude,” is available on Melania’s website and features a flower pendant with an adjustable chain. It can be personalized with engravings of names, initials, or significant dates, making it a potentially meaningful gift for mothers.

On her website, Melania states that she designed the necklace to honor all mothers and that it’s a one-of-a-kind customization.  The flower shaped pendant, similar in shape to a three-leaf-clover, measures 1 inch, includes a 16–18-inch adjustable chain, and is made in gold vermeil.  And as an added bonus, Melania Trump’s signature is included on each necklace.

“Being a mother is one of the most important roles in life. For this Mother’s Day, I have designed the ‘Her Love & Gratitude’ necklace to express immense gratitude and honor all mothers,” Melania said in a statement Sunday shared by The Hill.  Those who buy the necklace can also receive a limited-edition digital collectible that is minted with the Solana blockchain, according to a Melania Trump spokesperson.

While Melania’s sentiments regarding the importance of mothers in our society are indeed noble, they are easily being overshadowed by the broader context of the Trump family’s current activities, most importantly Donald Trump’s historic and ongoing legal challenges and the costs associated with them.  Today, one day after the launch of Melania’s necklace, Donald Trump will be appearing in criminal court in New York City in his highly publicized hush money trial.

It’s a moment nearly eight years in the making, dating back to the fall of 2016, just days before the election, when that witness, Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about an alleged sexual encounter. Prosecutors say Trump reimbursed Cohen for the payment in 12 monthly installments during the first year of his presidency, portraying them as checks for ongoing legal services in a scheme to conceal the “hush money.” Trump was charged last year with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. ~  CBS News

Melania’s necklace launch has met with a fair amount of mixed reactions. While some view it as a thoughtful tribute to mothers, others have criticized and downright mocked the move, seeing it as out of touch given the price point. The announcement was made on social media, where it quickly became a topic of conversation, with many users expressing their opinions on the matter.

“$250 for vermeil? Are you kidding me?” one detractor wrote. “And why is your signature so huge… [it’s] larger [than] the engravings for our loved ones? Heck, you really think highly of yourself if you think we’d want your signature to be larger than the names of our children. Grifters gonna grift I guess?”

Meanwhile, Donald’s second week of criminal court has commenced. Opening statements in the trial got underway today (Monday, April 22) and Melania, nor any of Trump’s other family members were in attendance. Trump ignored a shouted question from a reporter this morning asking him where Melania was before he headed into the courtroom, according to Business Insider.
