Mets’ pitcher Rhame suspended and fined for headshots against Phillies’ Hoskins
New York Mets’ relief pitcher Jacob Rhame has been suspended for two-games and fined an undisclosed monetary sum for intentionally throwing a pitch in the area of the head of Rhys Hoskins of the Philadelphia Phillies during the top of the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s game at Citi Field. Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement yesterday.
Rhame sailed two pitches over Hoskins’ head with two outs in the ninth inning of New York’s 9-0 win, one day after two Mets were hit by pitches. The Philadelphia cleanup man said later that the Mets catcher insisted they were trying to go inside. ~ per ESPN
Hoskins got some major payback of his own at Wednesday’s game when he belted a two-run homer against Rhame. Adding insult to injury, Hoskins took a leisurely and taunting stroll around the bases (see the video below) – recording the slowest home run jog to home plate this season. The Phillies won Wednesday’s match-up 6 – 0.
Unless appealed, Rhame’s suspension is scheduled to begin today, when the Mets host the Milwaukee Brewers. If Rhame decides to file an appeal, then the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
There is definite bad blood brewing between these teams, which is good for baseball.
