“What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?”

On Sunday morning, September 8, just hours before the season opening game between the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tyreek Hill – the 30-year-old star wide receiver for the Dolphins – was stopped by police in Miami not far from the Hard Rock Stadium for a traffic violation.  The stop reportedly resulted in a verbal altercation between Hill and the officers and ended with the wide receiver being detained, handcuffed, and forced to lay on the ground, albeit “briefly.”  A second Dolphin player was also handcuffed after trying to discuss the situation with the officers.

Hill received a traffic citation for reckless driving and was released after being detained.  The Dolphins’ organization issued a statement on X, saying . . .

This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.

A video was also posted on X showing officers detaining Hill and having him lay down on the ground face first.

Fox News quoted Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, as saying : “What happened today to Tyreek at the stadium is completely unacceptable. Tyreek did not deserve to be treated that way by the police involved. Tyreek’s legal team will be pursuing this matter on Tyreek’s behalf and I’m sure they will consider taking legal action.”

One of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) officers involved in detaining the players has since been placed on administrative leave, according to CNN.  MDPD Director Stephanie V. Daniels said Sunday that an investigation has begun into the incident.

Later in the day, Hill addressed the situation …

Following the game, Hill told reporters that it meant a lot to him to know that his teammates have his back.  “I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone.  When they showed up, it made me realize that we have a f—— good team this year.”

The Dolphins won their season opener yesterday against the Jaguars 20-17.  For more on Hill being detained and handcuffed yesterday, see the video accompanying this article.
