Miami Marlins hire former San Francisco Giants Manager Gabe Kapler
If you’re not familiar with the name Gabe Kapler, “Kap” is a former MLB outfielder who from 1998 – 2010, played for the Tigers, Rangers, Rockies, Red Sox, Brewers, and the Tampa Bay Rays before going into coaching and later managing the Phillies and Giants. Kapler, 48, made the headlines recently when he was unceremoniously fired by the San Fransico Giants “with three days left in the 2023 regular season after the team failed to make the playoffs for a second straight year,” according to The Associated Press.
On December 1, it was reported that Kapler managed to bounce back successfully, and was named as an assistant general manager in the Miami Marlins’ front office.
Kap was criticized during his tenure with the Giants and was characterized as being too laid back as a manager. Miami has recently gone through some changes, primarily due to their new president of baseball operations, Peter Bendix, a former member of the Rays’ front office.
CBS Sports can confirm that the Marlins have hired another former member of the Rays front office to join Bendix’s staff: Vinesh Kanthan, most recently with the Texas Rangers, will serve as Miami’s director of baseball operations.
During his happier days managing in San Fransisco, Kapler was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2021 – a year in which he led the Giants to a franchise-record 107 wins and the NL West title. For more on his recent hiring in Miami, see the video accompanying this article.
