Miami Marlins sign outfielder Jorge Soler to three-year $36 million contract
The Miami Marlins announced today that the team signed outfielder Jorge Soler to a three-year contract. That three-year-contract will bring home $36 million for the La Habana, Cuba, native.
The 30-year-old Soler hit .223 with 27 home runs and 70 RBI in 149 games between Kansas City and World Series champion Atlanta in 2021. He hit .300 with 3 home runs and 6 RBI in six games during the 2021 World Series, earning World Series MVP honors. Soler and former Marlins pitcher Liván Hernández (1997) are the only two Cuban-born players to be named World Series MVP in MLB history.
He ranked in the top 22 percent of MLB players in Max Exit Velocity at 117.9 (99th percentile), Average Exit Velocity at 91.2 (83rd percentile), Barrel Percentage at 12.7 (82nd percentile), expected Slugging Percentage at .494 (81st percentile), Chase Rate at 23 percent (80th percentile), Hard Hit Percentage at 47 (79th percentile) and Walk Rate 11.1 percent (78th percentile) in 2021.
A two-time World Series champion (also 2016 with the Chicago Cubs), Soler is a .246 career hitter, with 121 home runs, 343 RBI and 5.7 WAR in 661 games across eight Major League seasons between Chicago-NL (2014-16), Kansas City (2017-2021) and Atlanta (2021). He led the American League with 48 homers in 2019, while driving in 117 runs and playing in all 162 games.
Defensively, Soler has played 353 career games in right field, including 96 in 2021. He also played 60 games in left field between 2016-17. As a designated hitter, he is a .254 career hitter with 59 home runs and 145 RBI in 217 career games.
Soler is the first World Series MVP Award winner acquired by the Marlins. He is also the first reigning World Series MVP to change teams in the offseason since Edgar Renteria (2010 WS MVP with San Francisco) signed with Cincinnati for the 2011 season.
