(March 23, 2025) On Friday, Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. announced that free agent pitcher Julio Urías has been suspended until the conclusion of the 2025 All-Star break for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Urías will be reinstated from the restricted list on July 17, 2025.

Manfred issued the following statement regarding the discipline:

“The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations that free agent pitcher Julio Urías violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Urías violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate.”

Background:  Urías was arrested on back in September 2023 on suspicion of felony domestic violence in connection with an altercation that took place outside of a Major League Soccer game at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.  According to The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office back then:  Urías was “engaged in an argument whereby the Defendant pushed the Victim against a fence and pulled her by the hair or shoulders,” according to the county’s report. However, the county deemed that “neither the Victim’s injuries nor the Defendant’s criminal history justify a felony filing.”

Beating a felony rap, in 2024 Urias was instead charged with five misdemeanors: “one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment and one count of assault,” according to The Los Angeles Times.

Urías pleaded no contest to those charges, sentenced to three years of probation, 30 days community labor and was ordered to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course and pay a domestic violence fund fee, according to The Athletic.

MLB placed Urías on paid administrative leave on September 6, 2023. He has not played another game in the Bigs since and he remains a free agent. Urías has agreed to submit to an evaluation by the Joint Policy Board under the collectively bargained policy, and to comply with any of the board’s recommendations.
