MMA fighter Tyler East shot dead in New Mexico during domestic violence dispute

Yesterday, the New Mexico State Police reported that Tyler East, a former MMA fighter with a troubled past, was shot and killed in Los Lunas Monday evening.  On April 5 at approximately 5 p.m., the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 4235 State Road 314 in Los Lunas, New Mexico, regarding a domestic violence call.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they located a woman with a gunshot wound and a deceased male victim on the property. The deceased male victim was later identified by authorities as 30-year-old Tyler East. The injured female was transported to a hospital in Albuquerque where she is being treated for her injuries.

East was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigators.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate this homicide. State Police agents learned that East and his girlfriend were having a domestic dispute. During the dispute, East brandished a weapon, shot his girlfriend, and then dragged her out of the residence.

While outside, East was shot by a male subject who was at the residence. East succumbed to his injuries. The male subject fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival.

This investigation remains active and is being led by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau. The former MMA fighter’s injured girlfriend is reportedly in stable condition and remains in an Albuquerque hospital where she continues to be treated for her injuries.

East’s MMA History

According to MMA site Sherdog, East tallied a 15-6 career record as a heavyweight fighting across various organizations including Bellator. His last fight was at Legacy FC 60 in 2016. He was the brother of ex-UFC fighter Cody East, according to MMA Junkie.

East was arrested in 2020 on charges of stealing money from his dead grandfather’s bank account in addition to battery and resisting arrest after allegedly fleeing from police, according to KRQE. According to MMA Junkie, he was arrested multiple times in the last 12 years on domestic violence-related charges including kidnapping and aggravated battery. ~ per Yahoo! Sports
