Momoa: ‘Sorry Warner Bros: We can’t shoot Aquaman 2 because Jason got run over by a bulldozer’
You may have heard some rumblings recently about the proposed construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) that scientists and educators were hoping to build in Hawaii. But the group planning to construct that telescope has been thwarted by protestors. First, the telescope would be an aesthetic nightmare on the Hawaiian landscape sitting atop the dormant volcano Mauna Kea, a mountain that peaks about 14,000’ above sea level.
Secondly and more importantly though, builders chose an area where the land is considered sacred to the Hawaiian natives in terms of their religious and cultural beliefs. Protests have proven to be so successful in delaying the construction of the TMT that those in charge are now seeking permission to build that telescope in Spain “because protesters are blocking the project in Hawaii.”
One of the more vocal and well-known of those protestors is Hawaiian born Jason Momoa, of “Game and Thrones” and “Aquaman” fame. In an August 9 Instagram post, the beloved actor posted:
Sorry Warner Bros we can’t shoot Aquaman 2. Because Jason got run over by a bulldozer trying to stop the desecration of his native land THIS iS NOT HAPPENING. WE ARE NOT LETTING YOU DO THIS ANYMORE. Enough is enough. Go somewhere else. Repost. This is what telescope construction looks like . . .
As serious as Momoa is regarding his protesting of that TMT, his being “run over by a bulldozer” was posted in a tongue-in-cheek manner. He Is contractually obligated with the studio for “Aquaman 2” which is scheduled for theatrical release on December 16, 2020, according to The Wrap. The original, 2018, “Aquaman” film starring Momoa grossed $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office, was directed by James Wan, and was the highest grossing DC Universe film of all time.
On August 10, Momoa posted another note and picture on Instagram, asking for the public’s support to protect Mauna Kea.
Pls support kīa’i for the @protectmaunakea movement. During this time, we are trying to unite both kānaka and Hawai’i born peoples alike to protect not only the mauna, but also our way of life and greatest natural resources in Hawaii as a whole. We feel that our movement has successfully united all aspects of Hawaiian culture with the exception of our traditional ocean practices – namely surfing, fishing, paddling, etc. This is where you come in. Pls be an inspiration and raise awareness amongst the general public and the corporate realm to promote the conservation of our ‘āina for our generation and future generations to come.
