More human remains discovered in the dried-up lake beds of Lake Mead
One week after the 50-year-old discarded remains of a gunshot victim were discovered in a rusted-out metal barrel at the bottom of Lake Mead, more human remains have been found in the dried-up lake beds of the reservoir.
Following a 20-year-drought in the western United States, the world can now see some of the things that have been hidden beneath the waters of the once vibrant Lake Mead – an important reservoir of sustenance located on the Colorado River about 25 miles away from the strip in Las Vegas. Lake Mead has provided water to Arizona, California, Nevada and to parts of Mexico, where farmlands and nearly 20 million people have depended on it its life-saving bounty. But now, Lake Mead is drying up, giving up its secrets, and exposing the fact that the once bountiful reservoir has also been used as a dumping ground for human remains.
On May 1 at approximately 5:45 p.m., the National Park Service notified the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) of the discovery of a barrel containing human remains at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Detectives from the LVMPD Homicide Section responded and took over the investigation.
“We believe this is a homicide as a result of a gunshot wound,” said Homicide Section Lt. Ray Spencer. Detectives believe the victim was killed sometime in the mid ‘70s to early ‘80s, based on clothing and footwear the victim was found with. Investigators are currently working to identify the victim. This is an ongoing investigation.” ~ Lt. Ray Spencer, LVMPD
Police went on to say that they weren’t releasing any further information on the subject and that the identification of the victim will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office when it becomes available.
And earlier today, May 9, its being widely reported that more human remains have been exposed due to to the drying waters and discovered at the bottom of the lake.
Rangers with the National Park Service have received a report from witnesses about human skeletal remains discovered at Callville Bay in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The gruesome discovery and corresponding report to the Park Service was filed at approximately 2:00 p.m. PST on Saturday, May 7. Rangers responded to the call, went to the scene and established a perimeter to recover those remains.
The Clark County Medical Examiner has been contacted to determine the cause of death of the second set of remains recovered from the lake.
